Peggy Paula is a waitress at the Perkins, a job that brings her close enough to smell the popular girls she yearns to know. “Three Things You Should Know About Peggy Paula,” is one of the saddest stories I have ever read it is also one of the loveliest. She is a writer who knows how to shape the reading experience, who makes her craft felt without overwhelming the story. She plays with language and syntax, forcing words together until they do exactly as she chooses. She builds crazy long sentences that force you to hold your breath, wondering, just wondering, where and how they will end. Hunter also writes about the kind of people we rarely see in contemporary fiction - there are no sons and daughters of privilege here, and her characters revel in who they are and where they come from. Her characters fart and piss and scratch and fuck. She is not afraid to write ugly (or is it real?). The grotesque is treated as banal - which, in reality, it generally is. Hunter writes, in part, about our bodies and how we live in them. This story is the first in Hunter’s second, and wonderful fiction collection, Don’t Kiss Me, which came out on last week from Farrar, Strauss, and Giroux.
